Current Benefits for Students
In addition to receiving full tuition and stipend support, all students in the Division of Medical Sciences program are eligible for the following benefits through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and DMS. The list here is to highlight the many resources that are available to you as a graduate student.
Tuition & Stipend |
All students, regardless of citizenship, that matriculate to one of the DMS PhD programs are fully funded while registered as a full time graduate student in GSAS. This support covers both tuition and stipend. |
Health Insurance | Students are eligible to enroll in the Harvard Univesity Student Health Plan (HUSHP). Students are not responsible for paying the yearly health fee. |
Education Expense Allowance | Upon matriculation to DMS, all students are given a one time $1,000 allowance to purchase supplies |

The Harvard University Student Health Program (HUSHP) is comprised of 2 parts:

Dental Coverage | Dental Blue, administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, is an optional dental plan that covers routine cleanings and some restorative services. |
Prescription Drug Plan | Prescription drug coverage is included in the Student Health Insurance Plan, and there is no dollar limit on this benefit. Prescriptions may be filled at the HUHS Pharmacy or any OptumRx-participating pharmacy throughout the United States. |
Mental Health Coverage |

Vision Care | The Student Health Fee offers coverage for routine and non-routine vision care. You can access vision care services at HUHS. |
Travel Coverage | Students enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan are covered throughout the United States and abroad. |
Maternity | Maternity services include all medical care related to pregnancy and childbirth. There is no visit limit when you receive maternity care from obstetricians, gynecologists, or nurse midwives. |
Wellness Benefits | Weight Loss Reimbursement Acupuncture and Massage |
Childcare Scholarship |
DMS students with children may apply for additional support from the DMS Child Care Scholarship. These funds are paid out twice a year for a maximum of five years. |
Parental Accomodations and Financial Support | Female and male students enrolled in PhD programs at GSAS who are expecting a child either by adoption or childbirth are eligible for the PAFS program, which pays up to 12 weeks |
DMS PATHS Program | Many of our students are now pursuing diverse tracks including biotechnology/pharmaceuticals, patent law, consulting, science policy, and education. To support our students' aspirations, we have established an enrichment program, termed "Paths". The basic idea is that students with a common interest will come together in groups to participate in a variety of activities that will serve to prepare and position them for careers in these paths. |
DMS Travel Allowance | All DMS students receive a one time $600 travel allowance that may be used to attend a meeting or conference. |

Transportation |
The MBTA Semester Pass Program provides bus, link, and commuter rail passes for the fall and spring terms, October through January and February through May. DMS students can purchase these passes at a 50% discount by completing the MBTA Semester Pass order form online by the appropriate deadlines. |

Hubway Bike Share Program | Travel across Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, and Brookline using the Hubway, publically shared bikes that can be returned to any of the 140+ stations across the network, including the 12 supported by Harvard. Harvard affiliates are eligible for a discounted annual membership. |
