The HMS MD-PhD program in conjunction with Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Leder Human Biology and Translational Medicine (LHB) Program introduced student Grand Rounds in 2008-09. These sessions bring together Harvard's community of physician-scientists and biomedical researchers for discussions about basic science, clinical medicine, and their interface.

Clinically-focused sessions are led by BWH faculty and house staff and focus on clinical reasoning in the context of a recent clinical case. The majority of the session is devoted to an interactive case discussion in which clinicians will lead students through the reasoning required to arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan. This discussion will dovetail with a short research presentation by a current MD-PhD or PhD student with expertise in a related scientific field.

Science-focused sessions are initiated by the presentation of a clinical case that serves as a springboard for interactive discussions led by seasoned clinicians about the limits of current medical knowledge. This segues into a brief presentation from a graduate student on his/her ongoing research efforts related to the clinical topic. Senior investigators in the field also contribute to the discussions. Each session closes with an open dialogue about salient topics from the case with an emphasis on the frontiers of clinical practice that can be advanced by clinician-scientists and biomedical researchers. To weave the clinical and research aspects of the topic together, a student in his/her PhD years is paired with the clinical house officer presenting the case, and together they develop a presentation.
