Students
enter residency (advanced) training once they receive the M.D.
The residency application process begins in the summer of the
4th year and continues through the fall and early winter of the
4th year, with the preparation of application materials and interviews.
The process culminates in January and February (depending on specialty),
when students and residency programs send a list of their choices
to a central computer. The computer then matches students and
hospitals according to their highest choices.
The Office
of Student Affairs helps 4th year students complete the residency
application process.
We distribute
the The Residency Application
Process booklet to third year students to help them through
the Match process. We also produce a timeline and
a list
of Frequenty Asked Questions about the process that will be updated soon.
Many students
also find FREIDA (Fellowship
and Residency Electronic Interactive Database) helpful.
FREIDA Online
is a database with over 7,800 graduate medical education programs accredited
by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, as
well as over 200 combined specialty programs.
Besides
searching for specialty and subspecialty programs, you can also
search for training institutions, medical schools, aggregate
training statistics by specialty, and workforce information on
recent graduates.
Past students
have found it useful to double-check information with the programs
you are applying to, especially concerning application deadlines.
Another helpul resource is the "green book", also
known as the AMA's Graduate Medical Education Directory, which
is available for student use in the Office of Student Affairs.
The Electronic
Residency Application Service (ERAS) opens in mid-July.
After ERAS opens, we will generate tokens for fourth year students
and HMS
graduates who request them. The tokens
can be used to log onto the MyERAS website. More information
can be found by reading the ERAS
Manual.
Letters of recommendation should be sent to:
