  1. Are instructors or post docs eligible to apply?
No. Applicants must be members of the University with voting privileges in their respective faculties. From the Purple Book: “Professors, associate professors, assistant professors, senior lecturers, and three-year lecturers are voting members of the faculty. Other institutional or administrative personnel and principal associates may be appointed to voting faculty status on an individual basis."

See http://www.hms.harvard.edu/fa/handbook/purplebook/index.html for more detailed information about faculty appointments. The only exception to this policy is Junior Fellows of the Harvard Society of Fellows, per the Milton Fund Endowment guidelines.

  2. What kinds of projects does the Milton fund award?
The Milton Fund supports studies of a medical, geographical, historical, or scientific nature, which must be either in the interests of promoting the physical and material welfare of the human race, or of investigating and determining the value and importance of a discovery or invention. 3. I have a couple of federal grants but would like to submit to the Milton Fund to supplement these on-going projects. Would I be eligible to apply?
Priority is given to junior faculty who have little or no funding, to encourage the start of a research career. Applicants with substantial funding ($200K or more not including applicant's salary and fringe benefits) are given a lower priority rating for funding.

  4. How many applications does the Fund award?
Although the number of awards are based on the income from the Endowment, we typically fund between 35-40 proposals. View a breakdown of awards by Harvard school/organization for years 2004 through 2007.

  5. Do I need letters of recommendation?
Applicants from the Society of Fellows must submit a letter of recommendation. For other faculty applicants, it is optional.

  6. How are the applications selected?
A Committee of faculty from a variety of disciplines reviews and scores each application. The awards will be announced in late November or early December with starting dates of January 1. Please note that formal review letters are not sent.
