The Rodent Histopathology Core, based at HMS Pathology department, was established in 1999 as one of the pathology cores within the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center. The core evolved from Dr. Benjaminís histopathology laboratory whose focus was the tumor pathology of polyoma virus in infected mice. Dr. Rod Bronson, a world-renowned veterinary pathologist, joined the Rodent Histopathology Core as a visiting Lecturer from Tufts University at the creation of the DF/HCC.

The core provides an essential and unique service to the many Center members and labs invested in mouse research. While many commercial and academic histology services are available, no other service is available that offers comparable high quality service with rapid turn around time and highly experienced professional supervision. The educational mission of the Core also adds an important dimension.

Services that the Core provides focus mainly on mouse histopathology, and include necropsy, phenotyping of organs and tissues, dissection and tissue processing, diagnosis and one-on-one consultation. The facility also generates unstained paraffin and frozen sections to be used for immunohistochemistry. Furthermore, this core provides individual and group training sessions for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on the development, phenotyping and characterization of animal models of cancers.
