Educational and professional experience:
Dr. Schaefer graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Medical School, followed by internship and residency in primary care internal medicine at UCSF/ San Francisco General Hospital. She has worked as an academic clinician educator in general internal medicine and, more recently palliative medicine, in diverse clinical settings for more than ten years. In September of 2008, she joined the faculty as Director of Resident Education in the Department of Psychosocial Medicine and Palliative Care at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Schaefer is certified by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and by the American College of Physicians in Internal Medicine.
Current teaching and research interests:
Her academic and research areas of interest include medical education, communication and whole person care. In addition, she is collaborating with the multidisciplinary Advanced Heart Disease Program at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital to study and improve care of advanced heart failure patients at the end of life.
