Current teaching and research interests:
My teaching focuses on cancer pain, symptom management and clinical ethics. I teach our palliative care fellows and house staff when I am attending on our busy inpatient service. I recently started a monthly clinical ethics seminar for the surgery department. In addition, I teach a monthly seminar for Gyn-Onc fellows and Ob-Gyn residents on topics in palliative care. My research interests include: determining factors that impact quality of life in patients with advanced CHF and COPD; a theoretical work on palliative care, public health and justice: setting priorities in resource poor countries, and topical ethical issues in palliative care. In addition, I am involved in policy development at MGH for the medical management of pain at the end of life. The goal of which, is to allow generalists and specialists to use opioid infusions and other therapies in a safe and effective way when caring for patients at the end of life.
