The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is a 459-bed hospital for adults with an average daily orthopedic census of 18. It houses an active biomechanical research laboratory. The Orthopedic Service at BIDMC specializes in trauma and disorders of the spine and has a large outpatient general orthopedic practice as well. In 2001, there were 1,300 in-patient surgical cases and 1,791 out-patient surgical cases performed at this institution. There are 16 staff orthopedic surgeons, 1 orthopedic resident and 1 orthopedic fellow working in the Orthopaedic Department of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
