Deadlines and Timelines
Reviews are a collaborative process between the IRB office and the Investigator. In general, we have found that the following timelines apply from submission to approval:
Research and Human subjects determinations, 2-4 weeks
Exemption determinations, 2-4 weeks
Expedited reviews, 4-6 weeks
Full Committee reviews, 6-8 weeks
Please bear in mind these timelines when submitting an application and plan accordingly.
Tips:
- For sponsored research, submitting your IRB application upon receipt of a good summary score or
at Just in Time, will help to assure a timely IRB approval.
- Applications that do not contain complete information often take longer to approve. Please be
sure to answer each question on the application, and include all requested supplemental documents,
as this will streamline the process considerably.
- If your application must also be reviewed by another Committee, such as the Center for
Evaluation Medical Education Research Review Group, either pre or post IRB approval, please
add at least two weeks to your anticipated approval time.
