Public Health Service
It
is the policy of the Public Health Service to require that
research institutions establish and maintain proper measures
to ensure appropriate care and use of all animals involved
in research. This policy applies to all PHS-conducted or supported
activities. Additionally, all research institutions are required
to comply with the Animal Welfare Act.
Animal
Welfare Act
The
Act was passed by Congress in 1966 and amended in 1970, 1976,
1985, and 1990. The Act defines a minimum standard of care
and treatment that must be provided for animals used in research.
At HMS, the goal is to achieve and maintain a maximum standard
of care for research animals.
