on Gibbons,
Associate Dean for Public Affairs, concentrates on building bridges to the media and
general public as well as to Harvard's 17 affiliated teaching hospitals and research institutions.
His office produces the 19,000 circulation internal newsletter Focus and the annual dean's
report, manages Web content, and fields scores of media inquiries each week. Mr. Gibbons advises
the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and other school leaders on communications strategy and
issues management.
He currently chairs the advisory committee
for the National Communication Campaign of the Association of American Medical Colleges.
The group focuses on expanding the regional and national impact of the AAMC's campaign to
improve public and congressional understanding of academic medical centers.
Prior to coming to Boston, he served five years in the
Office of Communication at Stanford University Medical Center, first as associate director and for the last
four years, as director of the office that serves both the hospital and the school.
From 1987 to 1991, Mr. Gibbons was editor-in-chief
of the national physician's magazine Medical World News. In this position and at Stanford, he wrote
numerous editorial commentaries on changes in medical education and health care delivery.
Also with Medical World News, he was a
Washington correspondent covering Capitol Hill as well as the National Institutes of Health. Mr. Gibbons
was one of the founding editors of the early consumer science magazine SciQuest, and began his career
with the trade magazine division of McGraw-Hill following graduation from Indiana University.
