Meet the Investigator Series
Fall 2009
Time: 12:30-1:30pm
Location: TMEC

Thursday, September 24, 2009 (TMEC L008)
Eric J. Rubin, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Rubin is a professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Harvard School of Public Health and attends in the department of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His lab uses genetic and molecular techniques to study the virulence of Tuberculosis with a view towards generating attenuated strains that could be used in vaccines.

Friday, October 16, 2009 (TMEC 333)
Marcia B. Goldberg, M.D. & Alan Grossman, Ph.D.
Dr. Goldberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Harvard School of Public Health. Her laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital centers around studying the effect of molecular interactions between the host and the microbial pathogen Shigella on host signaling mechanisms.
Dr. Grossman is a Professor in the Department of Biology at MIT. His research uses diverse genetic, molecular, biochemical, physiological and genomic techniques to investigate signal transduction pathways and basic cell biology, using Bacillus subtillis as a model. Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Grossman are married and will lead the session together.

Thursday, October 22, 2009 (TMEC L008)
Rachel Wilson, Ph.D.
Dr. Wilson is an Associate Professor of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. Her laboratory studies how sensory stimuli, especially olfactory signals, are encoded in patterns of stimulation in the brain by using Drosophila as a model.

Thursday, November 5, 2009 (TMEC L008)
David E. Cohen, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Cohen, himself a graduate of the Harvard M.D./Ph.D. program, is currently director of the HST MD program at HMS.  He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at HMS, Director of Hepatology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, and an attending in Gastroenterology at the BWH.  His laboratory at the BWH focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which the liver clears cholesterol from the blood.

Friday, November 20, 2009 (TMEC 333)
David Sabatini, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Sabatini is a member of the Whitehead and Broad Institutes, and an Associate Professor of Biology at MIT.  His laboratory at the Whitehead studies the mechanisms that regulate cell growth, such as the TOR pathway.

Thursday, December 3, 2009 (TMEC L008)
Jeffrey S. Flier, M.D.
Dean Flier has been Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard since September 2007.  An endocrinologist whose lab actively studied the molecular causes of obesity and diabetes, Dean Flier is also a Professor of Medicine at HMS.  Prior to his current role, Dean Flier served as HMS Faculty Dean for Academic Programs and Chief Academic Officer for the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
