The Joint Committee on the Status of Women (JCSW) was formed to facilitate and enhance the contribution of women at Harvard Medical and Dental Schools by expanding and improving our opportunities for advancement. The JCSW is comprised of both Staff and Faculty members.

Items of InterestCivic Engagement and Service Initiative Learn about a JCSW-led initiatives to provide service to others in need in our communities. Upcoming events include a winter coat drive and an organized Volunteer Day at The Greater Boston Food Bank. AAMC August 2009: "Unconscious Bias in Faculty and Leadership Recruitment: A Literature Review" Women and minorities have made strides in achieving equality in the workplace, but they are still underrepresented in the upper strata of organizations, including senior faculty and leadership positions at medical schools and teaching hospitals. Social science researchers have pursued the theory of "unconscious bias" as one barrier to workplace equality that may persist despite a commitment to increase diversity. This Analysis in Brief reviews the scientific literature on unconscious bias, explores the role of unconscious bias in job recruitment and evaluations, and offers suggestions for search committees and others involved in hiring decisions at medical schools and teaching hospitals. In the NewsJCSW 35th Anniversary Celebration Featured in Article "In October, the Joint Committee on the Status of Women at HMS and HSDM celebrated its 35th anniversary. During an afternoon filled with reflections on the past, present, and future of women faculty and staff at the two schools, Dean Jeffrey Flier applauded the group for its impressive timeline of accomplishments." JCSW Member and Shore Fellowship Recipient Featured in Article One of our members, Dr. Rhonda Bentley-Lewis, is a Shore Fellowship recipient and is featured in a recent Harvard University Gazette article discussing the challenges of balancing work and family. Read the Harvard Gazette article online at Gender Differences in Grant Applications and Funding When associate professor Susan Waisbren and a faculty subcommittee of the HMS/HSDM Joint Committee on the Status of Women looked at grant applications and funding for HMS faculty, they found that gender disparities in academic rank play a key role in funding disparities overall. Women requested significantly less money than men at the lower faculty ranks, but reached a comparable level at full professor; there was no difference in the proportion of money awarded to money requested.
