Dr. Steffie Woolhandler is Associate Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and is based at The Cambridge Hospital. She has directed the General Medicine Fellowship Program at The Cambridge Hospital since 2000. She has published extensively on problems in access to care, including analyses of data from the Current Population Survey and the National Medical Expenditure Survey. Her analyses of the administrative costs of medical care, which have appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine and the American Journal of Public Health, are widely cited. She has also published studies of inappropriate medication prescribing for the elderly, the time course of emergence of previously unrecognized adverse effects of new drugs, preventive screening of adults, trends in the health care labor force, cost-effectiveness of free care, quality of care in proprietary versus non-profit HMOs and nursing homes and several other areas. She is widely known as a leading critic of market-driven health policy and advocate of universal health insurance.
