Provides a full array of analytical techniques and preparatory services in support of gastrointestinal lipid, protein, and nucleic acid-related research. The core also provides services for the cloning, expression and purification of recombinant proteins, as well as analysis of gene expression by quantitative real-time PCR.
The Core also provides access to state of the art technologies in mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography, and related proteomics technologies required for advanced studies in cell and molecular biology of the intestinal and hepatic epithelia.
Core Director: David E. Cohen, M.D., Ph.D.
Manager/Administrator: Michele K. Wu, Ph.D.

1. Analytical Services
a. Tissue and cellular lipid contents
b. Plasma or cell culture media analysis
c. Lipid transfer assays
d. Biliary lipid analyses
2. Preparative Services
a. Lipoproteins
b. Biliary Lipid Aggregates
c. Recombinant proteins
For analytical services, samples will be processed in the director’s laboratory and results will be provided, principally by email. For most preparative services, this core laboratory will purchase the reagents, perform the preparatory protocols, and then provide the requesting investigator with the materials in a prompt and expeditious fashion. For the preparation of recombinant proteins, the core laboratory may become involved at a number of different points in the process, depending upon the needs of an investigator. For example, if the investigator feels comfortable to design and clone an expression plasmid, the plasmid can then be provided for the production and purification of the protein in the core laboratory. However, the design and cloning can be provided as a service by the Core laboratory.
