Clinical Investigator Training Program

The two-year Clinical Investigator Training Program is a cooperative effort between Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, and Pfizer Inc. The fellowship's goal is to train physicians from a variety of clinical disciplines in the techniques and processes utilized in patient-oriented research. The program's curriculum allows trainees to develop direct experience in the performance of clinical investigation and at the same time, through didactic course work, provides them with a strong foundation in the computational and statistical sciences, biomedical ethics, principles of clinical pharmacology, in vitro and in vivo measurement techniques, and many aspects of the drug development process. Candidates must have completed the clinical requirements for Board eligibility in their chosen specialty/subspecialty.

The fellows have the option to pursue a Master of Medical Sciences Degree from Harvard Medical School in conjunction with the Clinical Investigator Training Program. The MMSc degree is awarded at the end of the two-year period, upon successful completion of the following requirements: Didactic Coursework - Fellows must attend at least 80% of scheduled seminar sessions; Research Project - Trainees must complete or make sufficient progress on a project, as assessed by their research mentor and CITP's co-directors; Thesis or Thesis Equivalent - Due by mid-spring of the second year; and Qualifying Exam - Reviewed by the CITP Steering Committee and the Harvard Medical School Dean for Clinical Affairs, or his designate. The application deadline is January 7, 2000.
