A gift to
a current use gift fund is a charitable contribution from a
donor for which no goods or services are provided in consideration.
Donors making gifts to Harvard which meet this IRS definition
are eligible for a tax deduction and the University's Recording
Secretary's Office sends them appropriate tax acknowledgement
documentation to support their deduction.
As
the name suggests, all amounts in a current use gift fund may be
expended at any time, so long as the expenditures meet the spending
purpose identified by the donor(s) when the fund was established.
Thus, the purpose of the fund is determined by the donor, with agreement
of HMS and the University. Endowment funds may have specific donor
restrictions or may be for the general purposes of the school.
