ADAPT Bulletin 8/27/01

Announcement from Harvard Travel Center:

US Airways has been selected to replace Delta Air Lines as a Harvard University preferred airline effective September 1, 2001. Some of the highlights of the new US Airways agreement are:

  • US Airways offers hourly service (15 daily flights) with full size jet aircraft on Boston/Washington “shuttle”.
  • A $2.50 reduction from current pricing each way on the Boston/Washington “shuttle”, with current pricing on the Boston/New York shuttle preserved for two (2) years.
  • An additional $4.00 discount each way for tickets purchased via the Sabre for Shuttle program. This is a no-fee option requiring pre-registration of Harvard travelers. The Harvard Travel Office will assist interested travelers with registration. See the Harvard Travel Home Page for details. http://WWW.TRAVEL.HARVARD.EDU
  • A non-shuttle “System” discount of 24% off all published fares. The discount could be adjusted upwards to 28% dependent on US Airways market share.
  • US Airways will accept Harvard discounted Delta Shuttle tickets issued prior to August 20th for travel after September 1st for an unlimited time.

This change was made because Delta Air Lines announced that effective September 1, 2001, it would discontinue the “Shuttle” between Boston and Washington, DC. A Delta commuter carrier, Atlantic Coast Airlines (ACA) will fly the route with eight (8) daily flights. ACA will fly the 32 passenger Fairchild Dornier 328JET.

Because this aircraft provides no jet-way access, has a limited capacity and the proposed schedules were inadequate for Harvard’s needs, it was critical for Harvard’s travel program to seek an alternative that would provide frequent reliable service at a substantial discount to our travelers in our second most traveled market. I

In the most recent 12 months, Harvard travelers flew 6,640 segments on the Boston/Washington “Shuttle” market. Because of our negotiated discount, Harvard travelers saved $125.00 per segment, for a total of $830,000 during this period.
