IX. Procedures for Annual Academic Appointments

A. Initiation of Annual Appointments

Annual appointments may be recommended directly to the Dean by department heads subject to the definitions below. These appointments may also be reviewed by the chairperson/secretary of the appointing department executive committee if such is the agreed upon practice within the particular department.

B. Definitions of Annual Academic Appointments

1. Instructor, full time, in this medical school the first appointment in clinical departments after the completion of postdoctoral clinical or research training. It may also be used as a teaching appointment in a clinical setting.

2. Clinical instructor, academic part time, based on the candidate's meeting the criteria listed HERE. Reappointment at this rank will be dependent on contributions to and successful performance in educational and/or research programs.

3. Clinical assistant, academic part time, for physicians or dentists who teach a limited amount of time, usually in institutions other than the major Harvard Medical School or Harvard School of Dental Medicine affiliates.

4. Lecturer, full time, for those individuals making a significant contribution to the academic programs of the Faculty of Medicine (teaching, research, or administration) whose activities cannot be adequately described by other titles.

5. Lecturer, academic part time, for recognition of academic contributions to the Faculty of Medicine by persons whose primary academic appointment is in another faculty or institution.

6. Senior lecturer, full time or academic part time, for individuals who make long term commitments to the academic programs of HMS and HSDM, who have previously held senior appointments in other institutions.

C. Definitions of Training Status Appointments

1. Clinical fellow, for interns, residents, fellows, or individuals in other clinical training positions in Harvard-affiliated institutions. This appointment can be held only for the duration of formal clinical training.

2. Research fellow, for individuals who hold an advanced degree in an appropriate field and who have chosen to associate themselves with members of the faculty as postdoctoral fellows to develop their research ability and skill.

D. Affirmative Action Form (Annual Academic Appointments)

Affirmative Action Report for First Annual Appointments is to be completed by the department head for first annual appointments or first appointments after a break in service of greater than two years. This form is not required for visiting appointments.
