II. Faculty and Institutional Obligations for Academic Appointments

A. Departments will implement teaching and other academic obligations consistent with Medical School guidelines for Harvard faculty appointments in the different ranks and ladders.

B. The level of faculty salaries and appointments will reflect each faculty member's contributions to the school, hospital, clinical or research organization, including teaching, research, patient care, and service. Medical School reappointments will depend on ongoing academic contributions.

C. Each faculty member will be expected to submit to his/her department head an annual report of academic activities, in their broadest interpretation, to include teaching, scholarship, and service to school, hospital, clinical or research organization.

D. For full professors (full time), newly appointed or with active current appointments, a written communication should be transmitted to eliminate any ambiguity about the source and extent of financial obligation. Written commitments should make clear whether or not the professorial appointment is WLT (without limit of time) or OID (of indefinite duration). In the case of WLT (tenure) appointments, the definition of the academic salary and the source of the guarantee should be shared with each faculty member.

E. In the case of faculty members in clinical departments who hold an appointment at an affiliated institution, the continuation of the academic appointment will be contingent upon the continuation of the faculty member's appointment at the affiliated institution.

F. In accordance with the recommendations of an ad hoc reappointments committee (and consideration of the report by the appropriate faculty committees), a set of Medical School guidelines has been promulgated regarding the criteria for reappointment or non-reappointment.

G. The Medical School and/or institution will make clear that they have the right to end a term appointment for good cause including unsatisfactory performance or misconduct.

H. Faculty members will be expected to comply with the faculty-approved guidelines on absence from the Medical School or Dental School. (See Guidelines for Sabbatical Leave or Leave of Absence.)

I. Faculty members must comply with the guidelines adopted by the faculty regarding (1) Conflicts of Interest and Commitment and (2) Faculty Compensation.
