• Subcommittee of Professors

  The Subcommittee of Professors (SOP) reviews and makes recommendations to the Dean on all proposals for appointment or promotion to the permanent position of Professor. The process by which the review occurs is described in the System of Titles and Appointments, Criteria and Procedures for Making Permanent Term and Annual Appointments (known as the Purple Book). Professorships may be Full-Time, without limit of time (tenured), Full-Time, of indefinite duration (without tenure), or Part-Time. They may be appointed by either full-time Investigator Criteria, full-time Clinician Teacher Criteria, or Academic Part-Time Criteria. These criteria can also be found in the Purple Book.

• Promotions, Reappointments and Appointments Committee

  Promotions, Reappointments, and Appointments Committee (P&R) reviews and makes recommendations to the Dean regarding all appointments to the position of Associate Professor or Assistant Professor. These are term appointments with a defined length. Associate Professors are appointed for a period no longer than five years, Assistant Professors for a period no longer than three years. Each appointment is renewable after appropriate departmental review and recommendation to the Dean.

• Clinician Teacher Subcommittee

  Clinician Teacher (Longer Service) Subcommittee of the Promotions, Reappointments and Appointments Committee reviews and makes recommendations to the Dean regarding promotions to Assistant Professor, Full-Time, or Assistant Clinical Professor, Academic Part-Time, for those full-time or part-time Instructors or Clinical Instructors with a doctoral degree, who have been in rank for ten years or more, and who have given meritorious service through teaching and clinical care to Harvard Medical School and its affiliated institutions. These appointments are for three year terms, renewable after appropriate departmental review and recommendation to the Dean.

• Annual Appointments

  Annual appointments (Instructors and Lecturers) require annual review by the department and recommendation to the Dean. Unlike the permanent and term appointments, they are not reviewed by a Faculty-wide appointments committee.

  
  No appointments become final until aproved by the Dean, and forwarded to and approved by the Governing Boards of Harvard University.
