Program in Urban Health

The program in Urban Health, directed by Dr. Patricia Case, is grounded in the core disciplines of medical anthropology and social epidemiology. The program supports multidisciplinary research located at the intersection of policy and practice. The program stimulates the development of new methodologies for measuring social and cultural dimensions of urban health. Special focus is given to experiences of marginalized and "hidden" populations such as drug users, women who have sex with women, and men who have sex with men. The program strives to foster collaborations among researchers and activists in many fields from within Harvard and the larger community.

CURRENT PROJECTS INCLUDE:

  • HIV Risk and Club Drugs Among Men who have Sex With Men: A two city Comparison
  • Adherence to HAART among drug users
  • Capacity of HIV law to deter HIV risk behaviors
  • Social course of treatment for lesbians with breast cancer
  • Drugs, coping, and HIV risk in the aftermath - September 11, 2001
  • Collaborations with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on use of Internet chat rooms and HIV risk

FUTURE PROJECTS INCLUDE:

  • Occupational drug use and HIV risk among NE Fisherman
