Dr. Robert Truog is Professor of Anaesthesia and Medical Ethics at Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Children's Hospital Boston. He is board certified in the practices of pediatrics, anesthesiology, and pediatric critical care medicine, and he holds a Master's Degree in Philosophy from Brown University.
In addition to his clinical and administrative responsibilities, Dr. Truog is Associate Director of the Office of Ethics at Boston Children's Hospital. At Harvard Medical School, he is the Director of Clinical Programs in the Division of Medical Ethics. His academic work has focused on the ethical issues that arise in anesthesia and critical care, and he recently authored national guidelines for providing end-of-life care in the ICU. He lectures widely both nationally and internationally. His writings on the subject of brain death have been translated into several languages, and in 1997 he provided expert testimony on this subject to the German Parliament. In 1993 he was awarded The Christer Grenvik Memorial Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine for his contributions and leadership in the area of ethics.
