Description: Each year the Department hosts between two and ten scholars and clinicians who wish to develop their understanding of medical anthropology. These independent research fellows, from the United States and other countries, join the Department for a semester or a year. During their stay, fellows audit courses in social medicine, anthropology and other interests; participate in seminars and events of both the Department and the wider University; and consult with Social Medicine faculty members. Usually fellows come to work on a certain project, using departmental and Harvard library resources. Many maintain a connection with the Department and become collaborators on new Social Medicine research projects.

Fellows pay a fee for this opportunity. The Department provides shared office space; a Harvard University officer's card which allows access to library collections and Harvard events; admission (as auditors) to medical anthropology courses, research seminars, lectures and other post-doctoral training activities.
