The Harvard Libraries are a remarkable resource for historical investigation.
In particular, the Francis A.
Countway Library is widely recognized as one of the most significant
collections of historical materials in
medicine in the world. The Rare Books and Archive Program--which combines
the holdings of the Boston
Medical Library and the Harvard Medical Library--holds an invaluable
series of records of medical and
scientific practice. There are more than 200,000 published volumes held
in the Rare Books Department.
Archival collections and unpublished materials, including the archives
of Harvard Medical School, are vast. The Rare Book and Archival collections
are among the most intensively used resources in the history of medicine
in the country. Moreover, much of the general collections are of considerable
value for historical scholarship. In 1998, Thomas Horrocks was appointed
Associate Director and curator for the historical collections.
