The Program promotes
and encourages student and faculty interest in the History of Medicine
with lectures and seminars, and by supporting student-initiated efforts
such as the History of Medicine Forum. The annual John McGovern Lecture
in the History of Medicine brings to the University renowned scholars
to address critical issues in the history of medicine. In 2000, Kenneth
Ludmerer, MD, Washington University, addressed "The Coming of the
Second Revolution in Medical Education" and in 2001 Evelyn Hammonds,
PhD, MIT, spoke on "The Logic of Difference: Race, Gender and 19th
Century Surgery."
