Core Component of the SHBT qualifying exam is complete if at least four A's and two B's are earned in the six SHBT core courses (in boldface above)

The program may require remediation if lower gades are received

Summer

HST.77x - Research in Speech and Hearing Sciences

Submit a proposal to the HST office at the beginning of the semester and a progress report at the end. Be sure your research advisor also sends a report at the end of the semester. You need to do these things each time you register for HST.77x.

To receive academic credit for research, sign up for HST.77x. You cannot register for Graduate Thesis credit until you have an approved thesis proposal.

DEADLINE - for submitting plan for concentration to area head

DEADLINE - for submitting a Dissertation Advisor Declaration Form to DMS

The form should briefly state the planned area of thesis research (one or two sentences) and indicate the dissertation advisor. Student and supervisor must sign the letter.

DEADLINE- for taking ORAL QUALIFYING EXAM

Oral Exam is based on concentration courses, and one summer's-worth of research. The oral committee has three members, one outside SHBT.

Year 4

Research (HST.77x)

DEADLINE - for submitting DISSERTATION PROPOSAL

Before submitting your proposal, you need to:

  • form a dissertation advisory committee(DAC) and select a chair. This is done through the DAC declaration form.
  • defend your proposal orally to the DAC
  • have the DAC members agreements to include the proposal submission

Note: your dissertation advisor cannot be the DAC chair.

Year 5
Fall, Spring, Summer

DEFEND YOUR THESIS

Notify DMS of the date & time of your defense so it can be announced publicly well in advance.
