Year 1                                 Fall term SHBT 200. Acoustics of Speech and Hearing * Core course
SHBT 201. Biology of the Inner Ear * Core course
  SHBT 301qc. Speech and Hearing Laboratory Visits Use SHBT 301qc and informal discussions with faculty and fellow students to choose a research topic for next semester.
SHBT 333r. Laboratory Rotation in Speech and Hearing Sciences After registering for SHBT 333r: (1). Send the SHBT Program a form describing the rotation (due September 20 for Fall term). Have your form signed or endorsed by your rotation supervisor. (2). At the end of the term, send the SHBT Program a written report briefly describing your work during the rotation. Have your report signed or endorsed by your rotation supervisor (due December 10 for Fall term.) Submit both a rotation form and a written report each time you register for SHBT 333r.

Note: The core component of the SHBT qualifying exam is complete if at least four A's and two B's are earned in the six SHBT core courses (denoted with an asterisk above). The program may require remediation if lower grades are received.

MedSci 300qc. Conduct of Science Must receive a satisfactory grade in MedSci 300qc.

To receive academic credit for your research, register for SHBT 333r. September 15 Deadline for submitting a Letter of Intent to the SHBT Program Identify a tentative Dissertation Advisor and general area of dissertation research. Begin to identify and meet with members of a tentative Dissertation Advisory Committee. Meet with your tentative Dissertation Advisory Committee at least once during Fall and Spring terms.
December 15
When you have completed your concentration area coursework, complete a Request for Oral Examination and submit it to the SHBT Program Complete the form in consultation with your Concentration Area chairperson

April 15 Deadline for submitting a Dissertation Advisor Declaration to the SHBT Program Declare a Dissertation Advisor and briefly state the planned area of dissertation research (one or two sentences). Student and Dissertation Advisor must sign the letter.
May 15 When you have completed your concentration area coursework, complete a Request for Oral Examination and submit it to the SHBT Program Complete the form in consultation with your Concentration Area chairperson

Deadline for submitting a Dissertation Proposal Before submitting your proposal, you need to: (1) form a Dissertation Advisory Committee (DAC) and select a chair; (2) defend your proposal orally to the DAC; (3) have the DAC members' agreements to the include the proposal submission
    Note: your Dissertation Advisor cannot be the DAC chair.
     
 
Year 5                                 Fall term
Research Meet with your Dissertation Advisory Committee at least once during Fall term.
MedSci302qc. Conduct of Science Refresher Must receive a satisfactory grade in MedSci 302qc.
     
Spring term
Research Meet with your Dissertation Advisory Committee at least once during Spring term.
     
Fall, spring, or summer
Defend your dissertation Notify DMS and the SHBT Program of the date and time of your defense so it can be announced publicly well in advance.
