Research Sites

Longwood Medical Area: The Longwood campus contains the basic science departments of Harvard Medical School, including the Department of Neurobiology. This campus also includes the Harvard Institutes of Medicine, as well as labs located in adjacent teaching hospitals: Children’s Hospital (particularly the Kirby Neurobiology Center), Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Joslin Diabetes Center. These labs are within walking distance of many parts of Boston and Brookline, and are near two branches of the MBTA Green Line.

Cambridge Campus: Cambridge neuroscientists are located in the departments of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Physics, Engineering, and Psychology. Many are located in the bioscience complex north of Harvard Yard. The Center for Brain Science unites many neuroscience labs and houses the newly established Swartz Program in Theoretical Neuroscience. A free shuttle bus links Cambridge with Longwood and MIT. Harvard Square also lies on the MBTA Red Line.

Massachusetts General Hospital: MGH is the oldest and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.  Its facilities include the MGH Main Campus, the Eaton-Peabody Laboratories at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and the MGH Neuroscience Center at MGH-East in the Charlestown Navy Yards. MGH runs a free shuttle between Longwood and these campuses, and there is an MBTA Red Line stop immediately adjacent to the MGH main campus.

McLean Hospital: McLean is the largest psychiatric affiliate of Harvard Medical School, and its research program is the first in the nation in a psychiatric hospital setting. It houses the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center and a Neuroimaging Center. The McLean campus is easily reached from Cambridge by car. For students relying on public transportation, McLean runs a free shuttle from the hospital to Waverly Square in Belmont. Waverly Square can be reached either by commuter train, or by the MBTA Red Line to Harvard Square and the #73 bus from Harvard Square to the end of the line in Belmont.
