Be aware that students will want to apply for some of these fellowships early in the fall of the year prior to their admission to graduate school. For example, Ford Foundation applications are due on the 1st of November.


Smooth Transitions Minority Student Handbook, published jointly by the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the W. E. B. Du Bois Graduate Society. This valuable handbook contains sections written by minority faculty and students. It covers everything from academic and extracurricular life, through student organizations and resources, to community resources such as housing, public transportation, restaurants, barbershops, and opportunities for volunteer service. While the book is intended primarily for newly matriculated students, it is available online by following the link above. Limited numbers of printed copies may also be requested from:
