Minority Biomedical Scientists of Harvard

Outreach

M.B.S.H. recognizes that an important way of countering the lack of minorities and women in science is to increase the interest of young people in this field. In the Fall of 1999, M.B.S.H. members initiated what we hope will be the first in a series of events aimed at addressing this problem. On November 16, 1999 students from the neighboring Boston Latin School were invited to visit Harvard Medical School for a day. M.B.S.H. volunteers escorted small groups of students to a number of laboratories in and around the Quad where they were given a small taste of what scientific research is about. Students were treated to brief presentations by the labortary's principal investigator and to demonstrations of various techniques and experiments. Additional graduate student presentations and a round table discussion gave Boston Latin students the opportunity to ask as many questions about science, school, and research as they liked. About 30 Boston Latin Students participated and the day was considered a great success by all involved.

M.B.S.H. would like to thank all of the people who volunteered their time and effort to make this day possible.
