BIG students win 1st prize in Vivli and Microsoft Clinical Trial Datathon

On  June 21, 2019, BIG students Qingbo Wang and Gaurav Luthria participated in and won the Vivli Microsoft Data Challenge!

As a solution for sharing patient data while maintaining patient privacy, they proposed a two-folded approach:

  1. 1. Advanced Querying Language to extract summary statistics from the patient data while keeping the raw data itself secure in the cloud
  2. 2. Realistic Synthetic Data Generation, which enables users to work with a data set that are quantitatively similar to the real data

They implemented a prototype code based on these approaches, and showed that this could be highly generalize-able and useful for utilizing rare disease clinical trial data as a community.
