Post Doctoral Positions

Curriculum Fellow in Cell Biology

The Department of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) has an opening for a Post-doctoral Curriculum Fellow.  This Fellowship is for early career scientist-teachers interested in developing skills in teaching, course planning and course development in cell biology.

The Department of Cell Biology has 28 full-time faculty members highly engaged in its educational mission.  Over the past several years, the Department’s educational effort has been revitalized, leading to the development of new approaches to educating students at HMS, including: hiring full-time educators to advance the educational mission of the department, developing two new course formats for teaching graduate students, designing new courses focused on issues relating directly to career development, and improving educational approaches used in existing courses.  The Department is committed to maintaining an atmosphere strongly supportive of continued progress in education, and plans to further these efforts with the help of the new Curriculum Fellow.  In addition to being a part of the Cell Biology Department’s educational community, the new Fellow will also be engaged in interacting with other Curriculum Fellows at HMS that work both within and outside of the Cell Biology Department.

The main focus of this position is to help organize and teach the Department’s two major courses: Molecular Biology of the Cell for Ph.D. trainees, and Molecular and Cellular Basis of Medicine for medical and dental students.  These courses provide a unique opportunity for the fellow to participate in every aspect of teaching and planning courses in cell biology for two distinct populations of students, including: helping with curriculum planning; assisting lecturers in their lecture design and integration; developing educational support materials, problem sets, and exams; working with students having difficulty with course content; grading problem sets; and maintaining course websites.  Importantly, the fellow will be expected to teach, initially in small group discussion sections and eventually through giving a small number of lectures, and will be mentored in his or her progress as an educator.  Finally, the fellow will be encouraged to participate in projects of his or her interest, such as designing new approaches to teaching, or developing new courses.  These projects will likely lead to opportunities for the fellow to contribute to educational scholarship.

Qualified individuals will have earned a Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences by the time of their appointment.  The successful applicant will have prior experience or demonstrated interest in teaching, must have outstanding writing and organizational skills, demonstrated capacity for independence and innovation, and must be able to work as part of a team.  The appointment is for two years with a potential third year extension.  The start date for the position is negotiable, but ideally, we would like the Fellow to start during the spring semester, 2008, at Harvard Medical School in Boston.  To be considered for the position, please email: a letter of application that addresses your interest in and qualifications for the position, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and three letters of reference to: cbsearch@hms.harvard.edu by January 15, 2008.
