Curriculum Fellow in Developmental and Regenerative Biology

The newly developed Developmental and Regenerative Biology (DRB) graduate program under the auspices of the Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and funded by the Departments of Cell Biology and Stem Cell and Regenerative has an opening for a Post-doctoral Curriculum Fellow.  This Fellowship is for early career scientist-teachers interested in developing skills in teaching, course development related to the fields of developmental and regenerative biology, and participation in the launching and coordination of a new graduate program.

The Developmental and Regenerative Biology (DRB) program will launch officially in fall of 2009. However, curricular preparation for this launch has been ongoing for the past three years.

The main focus of this position is to continue initiatives to: 1) develop rigorous graduate curriculum related to developmental and regenerative biology, including nanocourses offered at both the HMS (Longwood) and FAS (Cambridge) campuses2) coordinate an annual hands-on course in experimental development biology, 3) initiate new, innovative extra-curricular programmatic activities for DRB graduate students4) manage content for the DRB program website and 5) generally serve as a liaison between students and faculty and between other Harvard University graduate programs and the DRB. There are roughly 80 faculty members in the DRB program from 10 different departments. Therefore, initiatives that promote intellectual integration for students and faculty are a priority for the program.

The fellow will also be asked to teach in small group discussion sections in a molecular and cellular biology medical school course each fall. The fellow is also encouraged to participate in education-oriented research and will have opportunities to teach in their area of expertise at the Harvard extension school when feasible.

Qualified individuals will have earned a Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences by the time of their appointment.  Applicants with specialized training in developmental biology are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will have prior experience or demonstrated interest in teaching, outstanding writing and organizational skills, a demonstrated capacity for independence and innovation, and must be able to work as part of a team.  The appointment is for two years with a potential third year extension.  The start date for the position is negotiable, but we would like the Fellow to start by June of 2009 at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

To be considered for the position, please email: a letter of application that addresses your interest in and qualifications for the position, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and three letters of reference to: cbsearch@hms.harvard.edu by April 10, 2009.
