Bevil R. Conway, Ph.D., Neuroscience, 2000-2001

bconway (at) wellesley.edu

I graduated from Harvard Medical School (MMSc, Markey Scholar, 1998), and the Division of Medical Sciences (PhD, Neurobiology, 2001). I was an Assistant Professor at Kathmandu University Medical School from 2001 to 2002; a Dana Research Fellow in the Neurobiology Department at HMS from 2002 to 2003; a Junior Fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows from 2003-2007; a Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the University of Bremen from 2005-2007; and I am currently the Knafel Assistant Professor of Natural Science, and Assistant Professor in the Neuroscience Program at Wellesley College. My website is www.wellesley.edu/Neuroscience/Faculty_page/Conway/index.htm (alias www.bevilconway.com).

Peter Kolchinsky, Ph.D., Virology, 2000-2001

pkolchinsky (at) racap.com

Soon after graduating, I was hired by a former biotech business executive to manage a small personal biotech stock portfolio. A few years later, we founded the hedge fund RA Capital and have continued to invest in public biotech companies. Our team has expanded considerably and we now manage capital from several dozen investors, including endowments and other large institutions. Although it may appear that my career path has taken me far from academic research, the job requires a detailed understanding of each company's science and drug development programs. I spend a lot of time talking to researchers and physicians and probably read more primary literature each year than I did during all of graduate school (though maybe that says more about my approach to grad school). Although, I probably won't run a gel or step into a cold room ever again, there are exciting discoveries and "eureka" moments where you find out whether your hypothesis was right or wrong.

IRBM is also a basic research institute funded by Italian academic grants. The institute hosts PhD students and postdocs together with Merck biologists, chemists, and pharmacologists. This makes for a unique mix of academic and industry science, which gave me great insight into the drug discovery/development process. My work was largely on the academic side, and I received an EMBO fellowship for most of my time there. I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Duke University, Durham, NC.

Renée M. Ned, Ph.D., Genetics, 2003-2004

rin1 (at) cdc.gov

I wanted to transition into a career in public health, so I did my postdoc at the CDC through an Emerging Infectious Diseases Research Fellowship supported by the Association of Public Health Labs. During this 2-year time period, I investigated immunity to Plasmodium falciparium (malaria) in infants born to mothers with placental malaria and/or HIV-1 infection. After my fellowship, I joined the National Office of Public Health Genomics at CDC. I work on, and help to coordinate, a project that is studying associations between numerous genetic variants and diseases of public health importance, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, asthma, and infections with hepatitis viruses. This work is being done with DNA samples from a large, population-based survey of the U.S. that is a unique resource for epidemiological investigation. Although I chose to leave the bench, I still use my basic science training in my current position.

I have been working at Columbia University Medical Center in Manhattan for over a year now as a postdoctoral scientist. I chose to switch fields from Cystic fibrosis research in my Ph.D. to Diabetic complications in my postdoctoral work. Integrating into a new field has been challenging and rewarding. I've also gone through the grant writing process and have been awarded a NRSA postdoctoral award from the NIH.

Living in Manhattan has been wonderful, albeit very expensive. I have enjoyed my time in New York.

Currently I am hoping to pursue an academic route, provided the job I need is there when I need it!

Marc Schwabish, Ph.D., BCMP, 2006-2007

schwabish (at) post.harvard.edu

After graduating I started a position at NEB (New England Biolabs) as a product manager (glycobiology and kinase product lines). It was a great experience. I recently moved to Manhattan and am now an Investment Banker at RBS, in a healthcare start-up group. It’s a very different experience, but I’m learning a lot and enjoying the change. I’m happy to discuss/meet up with anyone in similar areas (or thinking about such a drastic career switch).
