Donald P. Nierlich, Ph.D., Microbiology, 1962-1963

nierlich (at) ucla.edu

I completed my doctoral research with Boris Magasanik at MIT when Magasanik moved there mid-way in my studies; Bernard Davis kindly served as my Harvard adviser of record. I extended my at MIT experience with post-doctoral research working with Cy Levinthal on decay of mRNA. In 1961, I married Susana Chiarello, who was a working there for a Master's degree in Planning. An additional, exciting postdoctoral year was spent with Francois Gros in Paris studying how bacterial cells regulate their RNA synthesis. In Paris, at more or less the same time, were DMS-mates, Alex (Shedlovsky) Dove, Elaine Newman and Jon Beckwith. From there, I went to UCLA as an Assistant Professor and remained there for my entire career. While I took early retirement in 1994, I continued doing research and teaching for another 5 years. Since then I have been a guest in a colleague's lab (including doing a fair amount of bench work), have taught from time to time--currently a freshman seminar on genomics; and have worked as a consultant and expert witness on biotech litigation. Some highpoints of my professional years: I taught microbial molecular physiology, genomics, general microbiology, genetics, and nucleic acid chemistry; served for 20 years as director of UCLA's NRSA Genetics Training Program, and was a member of UCLA's Council of Planning and Budget and the UC Senate's Committee on Information and Technology. I was an Editor of the Journal of Bacteriology and for many years was either chair or a member of an American Society for Microbiology Publications Board committee that is today called Genetics and Genomics Nomenclature Committee. Susana and I have 3 children and we continue to enjoy an active life, sprinkled with travel, hikes, concerts and plays.

bmow (at) scigro.com

----1969 to 1973 - Postdocs at the University of Chicago in Biophysics and the Institute for Cancer Research in Fox Chase, PA, in somatic cell genetics
----1973 to 1979 - Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester in Microbiology and Immunology, Rochester NY
----1979 to 1985 - Associate Professor at the University of Rochester in Microbiology and Immunology with a joint appointment in the Division of Genetics in the Department of Medicine, Rochester NY
----1985 to 1993 - Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine at the School of Medicine, the Pennsylvania State University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Hershey, PA
----1993 to 1996 - Director of Biology and Senior Vice President of Research and Development, Zynaxis Cell Science, Inc., Malvern, PA
----1996 to present - Chief Executive Officer, SciGro Inc., Northeast Office, Cambridge MA

My major research interests include:
----Analytical cytology, especially cell tracking (both in vitro and in vivo), and
----Development of drugs/biotherapeutics/devices to treat a variety of clinical indications.

SciGro's practice is split evenly among the following three parts:
----Helping individuals obtain seed funding for small businesses/startups, usually through SBIRs or STTRs from the National Institutes of Health;
----Managing the day-to-day operations of two small companies that do not yet require a full-time administrative staff or scientific advisory board; and
----Performing diligence operations for a variety of clients, including Biotechs, big Pharmas, and Device manufacturers.

I also chair a variety of study sections for the NIH, participate in Massachusetts Tech Transfer Council (MTTC) reviews, am a member of the financial committee of the International Society for Analytical Cytology (ISAC), and sit on the steering committee of the Great Lakes International Imaging and Flow Cytometry Association (GLIIFCA).

I would be happy to speak with anyone about either academic careers or nonacademic careers, as I have found both to be exciting, challenging, and very fulfilling. To my surprise and pleasure it turns out that teaching/effective communication is a critical element in both types of career.
