In 1958, I joined the Sterling-Winthrop Research Institute where I rose through the ranks to Section Head in Pharmacology and Senior Research Biologist. I left to join the faculty at the Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill as Associate Professor. I was promoted to Professor with tenure in 1970. In 1972, I left to assume the post as Harvey Haag Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV), Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). From 1987-88, I was Acting Associate Director, National Institute on Drug Abuse, NIH. After returning to MCV/VCU, I continued as Chair until 1992, when I returned to my faculty professorship. In 1996, I assumed the post as Associate Vice President for Health Sciences at MCV/VCU. In 2003, I again returned to my current faculty position on a part-time basis (80%) to continue my active research program in substance abuse.
