The Joint Committee on the Status of Women (JCSW) was formed to facilitate and enhance the contribution of women at Harvard Medical and Dental Schools by expanding and improving our opportunities for advancement. The JCSW is comprised of both Staff and Faculty members.

Recent Talks of Interest in the HMS/HSDM Community

Dean Flier's Alumni Day Address on June 6, 2008

"In a speech to alumni during Alumni Week activities on the Harvard Medical School Quad, Dean Jeffrey Flier described the future direction of the School through the lens of the past year's milestones — key recommendations from the School's Strategic Planning process, innovative components of the new curriculum, opportunities for cross-University initiatives spearheaded by HMS, and the promise of discovery through a major multi-year NIH clinical and translational grant."

His comments in the section entitled Environment are particularly encouraging including "special attention paid to improving the diversity and gender balance of our faculty"

Inspiring Farewell Comments by Andrea Farkas Patenaude, PhD

As outgoing Faculty Chair of the JCSW, Andrea addressed members of the JCSW at a joint meeting on June 13, 2008. Her impassioned remarks reinvigorate us to envision a better future and she remains an inspiring beacon to us all.

Gender Differences in Grant Applications and Funding

When associate professor Susan Waisbren and a faculty subcommittee of the HMS/HSDM Joint Committee on the Status of Women looked at grant applications and funding for HMS faculty, they found that gender disparities in academic rank play a key role in funding disparities overall. Women requested significantly less money than men at the lower faculty ranks, but reached a comparable level at full professor; there was no difference in the proportion of money awarded to money requested.

New Criteria for Faculty Promotion & Appointment [link]

In 2008, Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine adopted new criteria for faculty promotion and appointment. These new criteria recognize the broad range of faculty activities that support the academic mission. By allowing the sum total of an each faculty member’s contributions and achievements to be considered in the evaluation for promotion, these new criteria provide many different paths to academic advancement for our extraordinary faculty.

The Harvard University Office of Faculty Development & Diversity hosted a working conference on April 11-13, 2008, for stakeholders to review current research pertaining to faculty diversity issues and utilizing these research findings in the development of specific tools and resources for institutions.
