Mentoring Awards

A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award
This annual dean's award, established in 1995, honors members of the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine faculty who have been exemplary mentors. Nominations are submitted by medical and dental faculty, trainees and students.

William Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award
Established in 2001, this annual dean's award honors a member of the Harvard Medical School or Harvard School of Dental Medicine faculty who has been an exceptional mentor. It is recommended that the recipient of the William Silen Lifetime Achievement Award have been a member of the Harvard community for a minimum of 20 years (need not be continuous service). Nominations are submitted by medical and dental faculty, trainees and students.

Young Mentor Award
Established in 2005, this annual dean's award will honor a young faculty member who has accrued a maximum of 10 years of service at HMS/HSDM. The award is intended to recognize those faculty mentors who are still in the early stages of their careers.

Career Development Series

The Career Development Series provides networking opportunities, skills enhancement and tools for the career advancement of physicians and scientists, particularly underrepresented minority residents, fellows and junior faculty. The conferences are co-sponsored by the Harvard Medical School Office for Diversity and Community Partnership, Biomedical Science Careers Program, Massachusetts Medical Society, Tufts University School of Medicine Office of Minority and Student Affairs, University of Massachusetts Medical School Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor and the Boston University School of Medicine Office of Minority Affairs.

Bridge Awards

The Bridge Awards are designed to promote the careers of outstanding clinical and basic science researchers who display promise for advancement and, by so doing, strengthen efforts to achieve a more diverse Harvard Medical School faculty. Such support is a key component of our efforts to increase the representation of underrepresented minority researchers within the higher academic ranks of the Faculty of Medicine. Bridge Awards for up to $10,000 are granted to individuals requiring supplementary funds to complete novel research projects or to provide salary support to investigators for their key laboratory/research personnel during a lapse in research funding or while waiting for confirmation of external research funds.

Center of Excellence in Minority Health Faculty Fellowship

The Center of Excellence in Minority Health Faculty Fellowship is a comprehensive Faculty Fellowship Program that provides training and support for HMS underrepresented minority junior faculty, with an emphasis on minority health and/or health disparities. The Fellowship includes a Research in Minority Health Seminar Series.

Diversity and Community Partnership Faculty Job Postings Web Site

The Diversity and Community Partnership Faculty Job Postings Web site is designed to help identify future potential faculty and to increase the representation of underrepresented minority faculty at HMS. This Web site lists positions open for junior faculty searches at the Instructor, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor levels at HMS and its affiliated institutions. The site also has a direct link to a list of open searches for senior faculty positions at HMS and its affiliated institutions.

Events that are specifically geared toward faculty development are listed in this on-line resource. Members of the HMS community can post their events to the calendar using an easy on-line form.

50th Anniversary Fellowship Program for Scholars in Medicine Sponsor-HMS Office of Faculty Affairs
The 50th Anniversary Fellowship Program for Scholars in Medicine was established in 1995 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the admission of women to Harvard Medical School and to acknowledge the important contributions of women to the School. As part of this celebration a fellowship program was established to help junior faculty at the point in their careers when they must teach, do research, compete for grants, publish or practice (if a clinical faculty member) at the same time that they may be assuming increased family or other responsibilities.

Joint Committee on the Status of Women
Sponsor-Harvard Medical School/Harvard School of Dental Medicine

The task of the Joint Committee on the Status of Women is to facilitate the development and contribution of women affiliated with Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine by expanding and improving the opportunities for women to advance and achieve their maximum potential. The Committee's members are comprised of staff and faculty from HMS and HSDM.

Office of Faculty Development
Sponsor-Children's Hospital Boston

The mission of the Office of Faculty Development is to facilitate the career advancement and satisfaction of HMS faculty at Children's Hospital Boston, fostering careers of all junior faculty, and increasing the leadership opportunities for women and minorities. Services include career planning, workshops and panels, leadership development, mentoring and networking programs, newsletter and electronic communication, resource center, and policy and program development.

The Office for Faculty Development (OFD) facilitates the academic development of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Faculty. Working with academic leaders, the OFD develops programs and policies to nurture and reward faculty for excellence in clinical care, teaching, research and academic service. The office supports mentoring and educational programs focused on the retention and promotion of talented physicians who, because of gender, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, traditionally have not advanced in the world of academic medicine.

Multicultural Affairs Office
Sponsor-Massachusetts General Hospital

The Multicultural Affairs Office (MAO) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) aims to increase the number of physicians and scientists from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds at all levels within MGH and to facilitate their career development. The Office is involved in residency training program recruitment of underrepresented minority physicians to multiple specialty and sub-specialty services. The MAO also sponsors national and local outreach programs that target underrepresented minorities at different levels of education in order to expose them to the many resources for training in the sciences at MGH. Another major focus of the Office is the development of a culturally competent environment within Partners HealthCare System.

The Office for Women's Careers addresses the obstacles women physicians face at Brigham & Women's Hospital and is a resource for women's career development and advancement.

The mandate of the Partners Office for Women's Careers (OWC) at MGH is to facilitate career advancement and enhance the career satisfaction of women faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital. The goals are to improve the retention and promotion of women faculty and to increase the number of women applying for and receiving grants. This involves identifying opportunities for advancement and funding, addressing career obstacles, and implementing interventions that will assist women in their career development and advancement. The OWC provides programming, professional and leadership training, and educational opportunities to enhance morale and productivity for faculty members at all levels and across all specialties. Further, the OWC ensures that issues critical to women faculty members reach hospital leadership.

Through early pairing of post-graduate trainees with faculty members, this program provides individual mentoring, career counseling and feedback needed for career advancement to residents in training programs

Faculty Development Award
Sponsor-Office of Multicultural Affairs at Massachusetts General Hospital

The Faculty Development Award, designed to help advance the careers of underrepresented junior faculty at MGH, provides funding for research, individual consultations and forgiveness of loans.

Minority Faculty Development Fellowship
Sponsor-Brigham and Women's Hospital

The goal of the Minority Faculty Development Fellowship is to increase diversity among the BWH's faculty members and within all of the BWH's training programs. This fellowship program supports physicians-particularly underrepresented minorities and/or women in postgraduate training programs and their first junior faculty appointment.
