Substance Abuse and Women of Color

Topics addressed in this session include gender differences in initiation of substance use, prevalence of use, and morbidity and mortality with attention to ethnic and racial differences.

This session reviews obstacles, as well as opportunities for treatment, with a special emphasis on the importance of family centered care. It will provide the primary care provider with tools to recognize opportunities for screening, brief intervention, and relapse prevention.

Additionally, this session offers a supplemental session on the Stages of Change behavioral theory which can be used to help providers tailor treatment options to women's readiness to change.
