Tanzania: LocationOur research program is based in Moshi, which is located in Tanzania, near the border of Kenya, on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.![]() Moshi is divided into 15 wards (indicated by the 15 color blocks, with names matching those color blocks given at the bottom of the page). The wards are then further divided into smaller sub-ward units, each with elected representatives called “street” (or mtaa/mitaa in Kiswahili) leaders. These smaller units are also named and represent “neighborhoods”. The darker mtaa in each ward is the first mtaa area to receive the intervention (the 15 intervention or treatment neighborhoods) and middle tone subward blocks are the control (delayed intervention or waiting) mtaa. The lightest colored blocks are those mitaa that are neither in the intervention or delayed intervention groups.
