Program in
Palliative Care Education and Practice

The Harvard Medical School continuing education course, Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice (PCEP), offers intensive learning experiences for physician and nurse-educators who wish to become expert in the clinical practice and teaching of comprehensive, interdisciplinary palliative care, as well as to gain expertise in leading and managing improvements in palliative care education and practice at their own institutions. Faculty who complete the training program will be prepared to teach other faculty, practitioners, and trainees in medical and nursing about end-of-life care, to create innovative educational programs, and to lead clinical service reform, including building palliative care programs.

PCEP traveled to Germany!
With the assistance of several PCEP alumni in Germany, a week-long version of PCEP for medical students/faculty was offered in Germany. Five of our faculty, including Drs. Block and Billings, traveled there to teach from August 26 to September 2, 2006 and plan to return in 2007.

Practical Aspects of Palliative Medicine: Integrating Palliative Care into Clinical Practice

The Harvard Medical School continuing education course, Practical Aspects of Palliative Medicine, offers physicians and other clinicians core information for providing comprehensive, interdisciplinary palliative care in their practice settings. For clinicians experienced in hospice, the course will illustrate how the hospice philosophy is applied in situations rarely covered by the hospice benefit. We will address the assessment and management of physical causes of distress, as well as psychological and social problems; review communication challenges (including advance care planning); and explore helpful responses to the needs of the family and of professional caregivers. We will also discuss in-depth approaches to spiritual distress and ethical dilemmas that arise in palliative care, including physician-assisted suicide.
