Description:

The program was established to encourage the nation's most promising young professors to pursue science and engineering research with few funding restrictions and limited paperwork requirements. The Foundation has a long-standing interest in strengthening both university-based research and graduate education.

The intent of the Fellowship Program is to provide support for unusually creative researchers early in their careers. It is further the intent of the Foundation to emphasize support for innovative individual research that involves the Fellows, their students, and junior colleagues.

Duration: 5 years Amount: $175,000 per year ($17,500 is available to the university as compensation for administrative costs) Foundation Deadline: March 5, 2010 (approx.)
Eligibility
Requirements:
PhD, MD/PhD, MD

Applicants must:
  1. Applicant must be within the first 3 years of their "faculty career." That is, the initial faculty appointment, whether at Harvard or another institution before Harvard, must have been on or after May 31, 2007, and no later than May 31, 2010.

  2. Citizenship requirements: none.

  3. Be engaged in research in the natural sciences or engineering. Disciplines that will be considered include physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science, and all branches of engineering. THE PROGRAM DOES NOT FUND CLINICAL RESEARCH, SPACE RESEARCH, PHYSICS RESEARCH ASSOCIATED WITH LARGE NATIONAL ACCELERATORS, APPLIED RESEARCH RELATED TO NATIONAL SECURITY,OR RESEARCH IN SOCIAL SCIENCES.

Note: Harvard University is the nominating institution for these awards. The HMS Foundation Funds Committee will select HMS’ nominees and forward their applications to the Provost’s Office. Likewise applications from HSPH and FAS (and others) will be submitted. A Committee appointed by the Provost’s Office will review all applications and select the University’s nominees.
